The Nickname He Didn't Choose

Monaky's fellow students at the University of Benin started calling him Fela Boy after he released his debut single, Very Lovely. It wasn't a marketing tag — it was a direct, instinctive recognition of where his voice came from. Monaky's father was, in his own words, a music fanatic who constantly played Fela Kuti at home. "My dad was a music fanatic; he loved Fela, and he used to play Fela back then," Monaky told African Folder. Listening to those records as a child taught him technique — he credits Fela's music with helping him understand his own voice and the baritone register that has since become the strongest element of his artistry.

Bob Marley and Snoop Dogg rounded out his early influences, and over time those three reference points — Afrobeat's political weight, reggae's rolling groove, hip-hop's rhythmic phrasing — fused into the genre-blending sound now carrying his name.

Patient Zero to Candor

His 2023 debut album, Patient Zero, introduced his fanbase to the charismatic harmonies and witty lyricism that define his catalogue. His 2025 sophomore album, Candor, pushed further — an 11-track record built around love, hustling and self-development, delivered in mid-tempo pop arrangements with a persistent thread of optimism. The album's most distinctive feature is its use of proverbs woven into pidgin English lyrics, appearing on nearly every track. Candor features Dessi Carter, Morello and Llona.

"Be Authentic With the Music"

Asked about his vision for his career, Monaky told The Guardian: "I am focused on building authenticity with my music, because these days people fall for trends and stuff, so music as an art should be about expressing yourself the way you see it, from your point of view... In all, just be authentic with the music." Asked for fun facts about himself, his answer was equally direct: "I don't know if there's anything fun about me. I'm always in the studio working. I love music. I'm an introvert, and I love to be in my space. However, I am an interesting guy to be when I'm comfortable around you."
