Shoday Artist Profile

Full Name: Shodade Solomon Segun

Label: 5K Records, Canny Consults, Sony Music UK
Education: National Diploma, Building Technology, YABATECH

From Choir Boy to Skit Maker to Sony Music UK

Shoday's first contact with music wasn't a studio — it was church. He has spoken about tagging along with his sister to choir rehearsals as a child, the moment he traces his pull toward music back to. That early exposure sat dormant for years while he tried other paths first: stand-up comedy, hosting as an MC, and content creation built around skits. Music only became his primary outlet once the other formats stopped being enough to say what he wanted to say.

He studied Building Technology at Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), earning a National Diploma — and has described approaching music the way he was trained to approach architecture: with structure and intention, building something meant to last rather than chasing a single moment.

The Caution Lesson

His first real signal came in late 2022 with Caution, which went viral and earned him his first TurnTable Certification System of Nigeria Gold certification. But the momentum didn't hold. "When it dropped, I wasn't familiar with the game," he told The NATIVE. "It was my first time having a viral song." Watching that breakthrough slip away because he didn't yet understand how to sustain attention became the lesson that reshaped everything after — fans later joked about his relentless 2025 release schedule, not realising it was a direct response to that early miss.

Hey Jago and the Turn

The real turning point came from an unlikely source: a viral comedic moment involving socialites Poco Lee and Rahman Jago. Shoday flipped it into Hey Jago, a record that took over dancefloors and street corners and cemented his run since 2022. From there came partnerships with Davido, Kizz Daniel and others, and a Sony Music UK signing through 5K Records and Canny Consults.

HYbrid: The Debut Album

On February 6, 2026 — more than four years after he started actively releasing music — Shoday put out his debut studio album HYbrid, a 14-track project built with producers Pheelz, Niphkeys, Hoodini and Semzi. The lead single, Paparazzi featuring FOLA (already covered on this blog), peaked at number 1 on the Official Nigeria Top 100, number 7 on US Billboard Afrobeats Songs, and number 12 on the UK Afrobeats chart, with nearly 50,000 TikTok videos circulating before it was even officially live. The full album logged 4.98 million Spotify Nigeria streams on day one and peaked at number 3 on Apple Music Nigeria, behind only Wizkid and J. Cole.

Premium Times' review of HYbrid noted the opener Glam and Fame relating pressure from family, women and fame before closing on a clean saxophone note, while Joy rides a hard-hitting drum pattern as Shoday philosophises on what actually brings him satisfaction. The throughline, as the review put it: the pain of struggle and the joy of success sit next to each other on almost every track.

Where He Stands Now

As of February 2026, Shoday commands over 3.1 million monthly Spotify listeners and more than 152 million total streams, with Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja as his strongest markets. His biggest individual song, Casablanca, has crossed 27 million Spotify streams alone. For an artist who once watched a viral moment evaporate because he didn't understand the industry around him, the structurally sound, steadily climbing numbers now are the clearest evidence that the lesson stuck.
