A Family That Managed Fela Kuti
Burna Boy's connection to Afrobeat's founding generation is genuinely direct, not just stylistic. His maternal grandfather, Benson Idonije, was a respected Nigerian broadcaster and music critic who served as Fela Kuti's first band manager and was part of the team that started Radio Nigeria 2 in 1977. His mother, Bose Ogulu — also known as "Mama Burna" — was one of Fela's dancers before later becoming Burna Boy's own manager, a role she still holds. His father, Samuel Ogulu, ran a welding company. Music wasn't an abstract calling in this household; it was the family business going back two generations.
FruityLoops, Corona Secondary, and a Stage Name Change
Burna Boy started making his own beats around age 10, using FruityLoops (later FL Studio). He attended Montessori International School in Port Harcourt before Corona Secondary School in Agbara, Ogun State, then relocated to London, where he studied Media Technology at the University of Sussex (2008–2009) and Media Communications and Culture at Oxford Brookes University (2009–2010). His first stage name was Shotgun before he settled on Burna Boy — a name he reportedly chose because he wanted something that sounded like a superhero. He left his UK studies to return to Port Harcourt, where he interned at Rhythm 93.7 FM for a year before pursuing music full time in Lagos.
Like to Party and the Long Build
His breakout came in 2012 with Like to Party, the lead single from his debut studio album L.I.F.E. (2013), released through Aristokrat Records. The early success didn't translate into instant global recognition — Burna Boy's path involved years of reinvention before the international machinery caught up with his ambition. He signed with Atlantic Records and parent company Warner Music Group in 2017, and his third studio album, Outside (2018), marked his major-label debut.
African Giant and the Grammy
African Giant followed and earned a Grammy nomination, repositioning him as one of the most important voices to come out of Africa in a generation. Twice As Tall went further, winning the Grammy for Best Global Music Album. His sixth studio album, Love, Damini, released July 2022, became the highest-debuting Nigerian album on the Billboard 200 at the time, and the top-charting African album in France, the Netherlands and the UK.

Burna Boy has a tattoo of Fela Kuti as a direct homage to where his musical roots actually trace back to, and he speaks English, Yoruba and Pidgin fluently.
