The Optometry Student Who Coined His Own Genre

Mavo is a 22-year-old Nigerian Afrobeats artist currently completing a degree in optometry at Afe Babalola University, with graduation set for July 2026. By day he's a full-time student; by night, by his own description and by the description of nearly every outlet that's covered him, he's a hit artist — and that duality is most of what makes his story land. Duke International Magazine described him recording hits on a modest home microphone in his university hostel room while his classmates spent their downtime on the basketball court.

He was born in the Emaduo community of Ekpoma, Edo State, and moved to Warri, Delta State as a child before returning to Edo for secondary school as a boarding student at Lumen Christi International High School. It was at Lumen Christi that he was christened "Mavo" — the name that would eventually carry him to global recognition. The origin is mundane in the best way: a school Music Club. "When I got to SS1, there was a club called Music Club," he told The NATIVE. "In that club, every Friday you go there to sing what we have made, or what we've written. That's where I started putting out my music. I started showing that I was an artist and I could make music. From SS1, guys were already vibing with me."

Burbur Music

Mavo's primary cultural contribution beyond his songs is a genre he coined himself: Burbur Music, characterised by mid-tempo Afrobeats production, heavy use of Esan and Pidgin slang, and themes built around "soft life" and luxury — distinguishing it from the faster-paced street-hop scene around him. His Esan ethnic background, language patterns and rhythms run directly through his slang creation and melodic choices, and he's become one of the most significant cultural exports from Edo State since the mid-2000s precisely because he's translated something esoteric and regional into a sound that travels nationally.

From SoundCloud to Spotify's Charts

His debut mixtape, Ukanigbe (2023), peaked at number eight on the relevant Nigerian charts and included Tumo Weto — a track that, more than two years after its original release, unexpectedly hit number one on Apple Music Nigeria in January 2026, a sleeper-hit story already covered on this blog. In 2024 he followed with the SANKO EP, featuring Expensive Shit and Kilobizzy, refining his style and building a fanbase he grew partly by personally reaching out to classmates and online listeners.

2025 was his breakout year. A viral snippet of Escaladizzy spread rapidly online before its official release, and the single became his first major hit. Shakabulizzy followed, then Money Constant with Wizkid, DJ Maphorisa and DJ Tunez — already covered on this blog — and then Body (Danz) with CKay, which became his first number-one song in Nigeria.

By the Numbers

As of January 2026, Mavo was logging 3.45 million monthly Spotify listeners and was named Billboard's African Rookie of the Month for November 2025. At one stretch he had three songs simultaneously occupying Apple Music Nigeria's top three positions — proof, as one profile put it, that he had staying power beyond a single viral moment. He remains entirely independent, operating without traditional record label backing, releasing and promoting his own music while finishing a professional degree. By his own account, he has toured the UK and collaborated with Wizkid and Davido, building what amounts to a parallel career in under three years.

What separates Mavo from the standard breakout-artist narrative is the discipline underneath the swagger — a student balancing a demanding science degree against a touring and recording schedule, who still found time to invent his own genre name and make it stick nationally. The Burbur story, as one profile noted, is only getting started, with three new projects reportedly lined up for 2026 alongside the small matter of an optometry degree.
