From Church Choir to Two EPs

Kemuel's musical journey started at 17 in his local church choir, where he learned piano, bass guitar and drums before he ever wrote a song of his own. His other creative pull took him to the University of Port Harcourt, where he earned a degree in Fine Art and Design — a visual arts background that shows up in how deliberately he treats his cover art and visual identity alongside the music itself.

His debut project, Escape (EP), arrived in October 2022 — six tracks, sixteen minutes, built around the idea of romantic escape from both sides of the coin, slow to mid-tempo productions that establish the soothing, immersive quality that's become his signature. Not long after, producer Ozedikus drafted him onto Bunda, DJ Spinall's collaboration with Olamide — a significant early co-sign that put Kemuel's voice in front of an audience well beyond his own.

Wondah: The Producer He Built Himself

Almost everything Kemuel has released since Escape has been shaped by his primary producer, Wondah — who is, in fact, Kemuel's own producer alter ego, the same person behind the artist name handling production. It's a setup that echoes how several Nigerian artists now work across both writing and production credits under separate identities. Alone and POLO followed Escape, eccentric Afro-pop singles that pushed him into bolder, more expressive territory. POLO in particular came from a real moment — Kemuel wrote it the same day after a long conversation with his crush, wearing his heart on his sleeve in search of a genuine connection.

CLOUDS and the Sonic Evolution

His sophomore EP, CLOUDS, is a seven-track Afrobeats, R&B and pop-inspired project that opens with the bubbly, unrestrained Alone before moving through tracks like 234 that continue the alt-pop blueprint. By the time CLOUDS landed, Kemuel had over 10 million plays online and recognition from MTV Base, BBC 1Xtra, TRACE, Apple Music and Spotify. He'd also picked up further collaboration credits with Peruzzi, contributing to You off Peruzzi's third studio album.

"A Conversation You Weren't Supposed to Hear"

His most recent single, Fini — also covered on this blog as Fini Fini — reunited him with Wondah on an unconventional, funk-inspired production a year and a half after CLOUDS. It opens with the cheeky line "Toyin tomato, what is your motive?" and rides a hypnotic "Fini, Fini" hook against the Pidgin phrase "Baby no wam" — baby, no problem. Kemuel described the writing intention directly: "I wanted 'Fini' to feel like a conversation you weren't supposed to hear. It's messy, fun, and a little reckless, just like the best moments in life."

That mix of minimalism, lo-fi rawness and lyrical wit is what's carried Kemuel from a church choir in Port Harcourt through two EPs, a string of high-profile features, and consistent industry recognition — proof that an artist doesn't need maximalist production or a viral gimmick to build a real catalogue, just a clear enough sense of what he's trying to say and someone — even if that someone is himself, under a different name — who knows how to build the sound around it.
