Running exactly 2 minutes, it is the shortest proper song on the album and one of the more spontaneous-feeling records on the project — and the origin story FOLA told Apple Music about it is the most unusual of any track on catharsis: "The way I made 'cruise control' was weird because it was not a song I planned on making. I came up with it on my phone. I saw that I wrote 'cruise control' somewhere on my phone's notepad while I was in the studio. I didn't write anything after that, and it was just cruise control. When I heard the beat in the studio, I just started singing, and that was how it came about. I was just in the studio, saw the word and caught the vibe." The track was produced by LOL, who handled about three tracks across the full album.
Catharsis debuted at number 1 on Apple Music Nigeria and accumulated 251 million total plays on Audiomack, with Pulse Nigeria's Adeayo Adebiyi describing it as an album where FOLA "expands on the sound that brought him fame." cruise control sits in the album as a lighter, mid-tempo breather between robbery (the Gabzy-featured emotional betrayal song) and caricature, and its breezy two-minute runtime makes it feel exactly as advertised — a song that arrived effortlessly, because it did.
